A Brief History of WWOOF |

For a full history written by the Founder of WWOOF, Click here
The WWOOF Organization was established in 1971 by Sue Coppard is an organization dedicated to helping those who would like to volunteer on organic farms. Sue Coppard, a secretary working in London at that time, was into the organic life but didn’t have the means to do it herself. She arranged the first WWOOFers group to go for a one-weekend trial at the biodynamic farm at Emerson College in Sussex. Needless to say the trial was a success and pretty soon other farmers and smallholders wanted to take WWOOFers to work on weekend basis. The farmers and WWOOFers found this collaboration very effective and enjoyable and this way the WWOOF snowball started to roll.
The WWOOF UK organization grew very quickly and established the systems in which farmers and WWOOFers benefit and enjoy their WWOOFing experience. The organization is showing a rare democratic spirit by implementing improvement suggestions from the members of the WWOOF regarding the relations between the hosts and the volunteers and so the world organization is constantly improving in order to make the WWOOF experience the best it can be for you.
One of the goals of WWOOF is to contribute to the redevelopment and use of organic systems and to spread this way of life around the world. It is suitable to anyone who is into organic type of life (the subscription fee is low enough) and it is proven as a fun way of changing the participants lives by demonstrating a more natural way of living.
Today, many countries have their own WWOOF branch that organize and publish the list of local Hosts (organic farms that are willing to host WWOOFers). The countries that don’t have a local WWOOF branch of their own are published as independent hosts and are can be found on several websites on the internet.
