| | permaculture farming initiative which aims to create a
center for environmental and social awareness, in order to encourage key
changes within Israeli society, that is, consuming behavior, resources use,
and abundance perceptions; ultimately, the objective is to foster changes in
people's lifestyles towards sustainability.
The farm is the product of a collective journey of inspired, motivated
students of the Green Apprenticeship (GA) Permaculture Design Course. Our main activities include
among others, taking care of an organic garden and twelve chickens;
ecological building with a variety of materials including straw bales and
mud; and designing/building other permaculture projects like greywater and
rainwater collection systems and solar ovens.
We also host a monthly exchange market that works on the basis of a simple
idea – someone's garbage is a useful thing to someone else. Through the
market we can not only re-use and recycle but we can actually convey the
message that we can do much with what we have instead of focusing on what we
don't have. |

| | We are a family with two young children, operate a small ( 12 dunam or 3 acres) organic vegetable farm on Moshav relatively close to the center of the country, but still in a beautiful and undeveloped area between Beit Shmesh and Kiryat Malchi.
The work expected of a volunteer, mainly helping to maintain, plant and harvest, is not strenuous.
I would like a volunteer to stay at least two to three months. When you decide to leave to give two weeks notice. The work schedule is six hours a day five days a week, but I am willing to be flexible for extra time off if there is not a lot to do.
We originally from the US (I grew up on a dairy farm in upstate NY).
We grow a wide variety of vegetables and greens as possible since we market directly to homes.
The living quarters for the volunteer (right now we can accommodate one person or a couple - a child we would have to talk about) are self contained. We want the volunteer to feel as part of our family as possible (especially if you connect with our children). When we sit down for a meal the volunteer will be welcome otherwise they have to cook for themselves..
it is not a problem to be picked up when you arrive.

| | We need help to build a straw bale house. The Village is an agricultural community on a beautiful sand dune in the Negev desert.
The house design includes ecological elements such as passive solar heating, natural lighting and ventilation, a wind catcher, composting toilets and a grey water system. We, a designer specializing in ecological architecture, and an agricultural engineer, designed the house by ourselves and are building much of it with our own hands. We are looking for 2-3 volunteers to share the experience and learn with us. We can host for a long period of time or a few days (at least a week).
We need immediate help to build scaffolding (to help future plastering of the walls). Experience in construction and woodwork would be an asset.
From December until the end of March we will need help with raising straw bale walls and rendering them with earthen plaster.
Working with straw and earth requires mild physical effort, and no previous experience is required.
Room and board will be provided.
Room: In the new house we have a built concrete cellar, which we are making into a basic, private, livable place. There is electricity, a basic kitchen and an outdoor composting toilet and sink. We will supply basic foodstuffs according to the volunteer’s requests.
Shower, warm meals (vegetarian and fish) will be given in our temporary home, located 5 minutes walk from the new house.

Produce that we sell through our distributors includes lettuce, tomatoes, avocados, squash, zucchini, pumpkins, onions, cucumbers, garlic, lemons, oranges, grapefruits, strawberries, passion fruit, watermelons, and a range of other vegetables, fruits, herbs, and nuts. Volunteers will be involved in all aspects of farm work, from preparing beds and planting to harvesting and sorting. They will have the opportunity to learn about natural pest control techniques from our pest management expert, who assesses problems and deploys beneficial insects and other natural means.
During their stay, our volunteers reside in private living quarters with an attached kitchen and bathroom. These are suitable either for one person or for a couple. Internet access is also available on a daily basis for free. Volunteers eat meals prepared with produce from the farm in a warm family atmosphere . Although we do not require a minimum commitment, we prefer that our volunteers stay for at least two weeks. All people who enjoy the family farming and the organic lifestyle are welcome!
